Marriage Licence

Make sure you apply at least three days before your ceremony

The application for a marriage licence must be made in person to the Registrar of Marriages in the Cook Islands at least 3 days before the wedding. Unfortunately you cannot apply for this outside of the Cook Islands.

You’ll need your passport and birth certificate to apply for a ‘Notice of Intended Marriage’ at the Registrar’s Office in Avarua on Rarotonga. If you are divorced, please bring a copy of the Decree Absolute. All documents must be in English.

The legal age of consent in the Cook Islands is 20 years and Cook Island marriages are legally binding worldwide. A Marriage Licence is $50 and a Marriage Certificate is $15.

A Marriage Celebrant is $100 and will happily travel to your wedding anywhere on the island. A cheaper option is to use a court registrar, who will conduct weddings away from the courtroom in the afternoons between 4pm-6pm for $45.
